AI inside’s Character Recognition API Selected for TIS’s “Spendia” Cloud-Based Expense Settlement Service

Contributing to DX of accounting by increasing the efficiency of invoice payment processing

Tokyo, November 16, 2022-AI inside Inc., which promotes the democratization of AI by providing AI infrastructure, announces that its character recognition API has been selected as the AI-OCR engine for “Spendia,” the cloud-based expense settlement service from TIS Inc. of TIS INTEC Group. By providing AI infrastructure such as AI development and operation platform, AI inside aims to realize “Smart X,” a sustainable future society that solves all social issues, by promoting business innovation using easy and low-cost high-precision AI.

Background and overview

Companies are making slow progress in implementing DX in their accounting operations due to delays in applying digitalization and processes being highly dependent on individual personnel. The revised Law on Book and Record Keeping through Electronic Methods and the introduction of the invoice system in Japan has created an even greater need for DX within companies. Against this societal background, TIS has enhanced the functions of “Spendia,” its cloud-based expense settlement service, to improve its billing payment operation efficiency, thereby supporting the creation of new workstyles.*1

“Spendia” is a cloud-based expense settlement service closely aligned with Japanese systems and business practices, which TIS developed using over 20 years of insight and experience in providing the service. It is a one-stop service connecting expense claim, payment, and analysis and also a SaaS solution, yet it offers rich functionality and flexibility, able to accommodate the requirements of individual companies. In addition, it is notable for its exceptional convenience, enabling all expense settlement processing to be completed via a smartphone app.

“Spendia” was recently enhanced by adding an AI-OCR  function that reads paper and electronic files using AI. This further improves the efficiency of billing payment operations. Specifically, AI-OCR is used to extract information from uploaded image files of billing statement automatically, and the character recognition results can create invoice reimbursement vouchers This eliminates the copying errors that come with manual data entry, reducing the entry workload for applicants, and the checking workload for accounting department personnel. As a result, it speeds up processing, and improves expense settlement and accounting operation productivity. 

for this AI-OCR function, the character recognition API, which is one of AI inside’s collection of AI intelligence API “Developer’s API,” had been adopted as the AI-OCR engine.  “Developer’s API” is a accessible collection of AI inside’s core technologies, which users can build services and applications with advanced embedded AI, without requiring long development periods or high development costs. The character recognition API used as Spendia’s AI-OCR engine can read handwriting text with high level of accuracy, and extract information from images in any format, which is difficult for conventional OCR.
