AI inside’s AI-OCR “DX Suite” Reduces 40,000 Work Hours Per Year at MS&AD Insurance Group with Highly Accurate Automatic Forms Sorting

Tokyo, April 26, 2021 — AI inside, in partnership with SCSK Corporation, is pleased to announce that AI inside’s AI-OCR “DX Suite” has been adopted for the cancellation procedure of Compulsory Automobile Liability Insurance (CALI)* at MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings, Inc. affiliated with Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company, Limited, Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance Company, Limited., and MS&AD Business Service Co.,ltd.
DX Suite has been implemented in the data entry process for cancellation documents submitted by the customers. MS&AD expects to significantly improve work efficiency by reducing 40,000 hours of work per year and eliminating entry errors.

Reason for Implementing DX Suite

MS&AD Business Service is entrusted with the operation of CALI by Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance and Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance. Workers at MS&AD Business Service used to manually input all those documents one by one from paper sent from all non-life insurance companies from all over Japan. 

Distinguishing and recognizing the cancellation documents were considered difficult by the conventional AI-OCR due to several reasons; the forms having more than ten types, different layout details for each insurance company, and complicated forms with handwriting and rubber stamps.

Also, another function of our DX Suite “Elastic Sorter”, supports their procedure. Elastic Sorter can automatically sort forms by type with highly accurate automatic sorting of similar forms, solving a problem that had been considered difficult in the past, which led to its adoption in this automated flow.

MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings plans to use the know-how gained through this approach to promote the automation of procedures using handwritten forms in other operations as well.

About the Elastic Sorter

Elastic Sorter is a function that AI automatically sorts documents uploaded to DX Suite by type. The AI automatically recognizes the type of document or form based on the features of the entire forms and can sort it at a high speed of 0.5 seconds per page (*according to our research). By automatically sorting the threshold for similar forms and features, it achieves a high accuracy in sorting.  The forms sorted by Elastic Sorter can be seamlessly linked to the character recognition process.

Overview of the Automated Flow

This flow is automated in connection with RPA for the task of entering the cancellation documents for liability insurance. First, after converting the cancellation documents into PDF format and uploading them to DX Suite, the forms are automatically sorted and the text is read and converted into digital data. 

Moreover, forms with mixed handwriting and rubber stamps can be digitized by linking them to the proprietary database of Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance and Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance. The data read by AI-OCR will be automatically inputted into the online software of Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance and Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance by utilizing RPA for the next step.
